Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on her role on the ABC comedy Roseanne. Her parents did not allow her to begin acting with her parents till she reached the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the anxiety it could result in. Perry claimed she felt shy to act during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent when she finished her degree. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her back to California and she returned working in the stage. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in The Family, an ABC drama The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
